“The country forces you to think bigger, faster and further” - Vincent Lyonnet

From family businesses to start-up founders, Paperjam 10×6 – Business Forward: National Champions gives the floor to entrepreneurs sharing their vision, their challenges and what they have learned as they prepare the next steps in taking their companies forward.

Vincent Lyonnet, Growth & Communication Director, Steel Shed for Business

Your company generates almost all of its revenue abroad. What allowed a business born in Luxembourg to take such an international direction from the outset?

“No one is a prophet in their own land: in our case, the saying sums up our story rather well. The Steel Shed group was born in Luxembourg, but our market was built beyond our borders very quickly. That has to do with the size of the country, of course, but above all with our model: selling steel building kits that are sturdy, functional and competitively priced, backed by an organisation able to respond remotely, quickly and in a structured way.

Through our commercial brands, batimentsmoinschers.com and tolesmoinscheres.com in particular, we now generate around 95% of our revenue abroad, in more than 60 countries, with 3,800 transactions a year. That growth rests on 25 years of experience, a strong culture of execution and one simple obsession: giving our customers a reliable solution for moving their projects forward.”

You often describe Luxembourg as a springboard rather than a core market. What makes the country an effective platform for growing internationally?

“Luxembourg is a small market, and that is precisely what makes it such a good springboard. Build an ambitious company here and you understand very quickly that you have to think bigger, faster and further. The country forces you to see international markets not as an option but as a condition of growth. For Steel Shed, Luxembourg was a demanding base: multicultural, stable, well connected, with high expectations when it comes to rigour and reliability. It was from that base that we structured our development, notably with commercial brands such as batimentsmoinschers.com and tolesmoinscheres.com.

Today we have more than 100 team members, generate more than €50m in revenue and operate in very different markets. Luxembourg did not hold us back: it forced us to become exportable.”

Looking ahead, what responsibility do leaders like you carry in building the next chapter of Luxembourg's economy?

“I believe our responsibility is to prove that Luxembourg can also produce operational, commercial, international companies: companies that sell, deliver, employ, innovate and make their mark from here.

At Steel Shed, our ambition is clear: building your future. It speaks to our customers, whose buildings allow a business to grow, and to our teams, who need to be able to look ahead and grow with the company. This year we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, with welcome news in May: the launch of a new brand dedicated to key accounts, designed to bring still more support, customer satisfaction and value to complex projects. To my mind, the next chapter of Luxembourg's economy will run through companies of this kind: companies that combine international ambition, local roots and tangible impact.”
